Scientific and Clever Octopus Names

There is no single species-level scientific name for every octopus. Octopuses belong broadly to the order Octopoda, while the familiar genus Octopus contains only some species. The common octopus, for example, is Octopus vulgaris. Smithsonian notes that roughly 300 octopus species are currently recognized, with taxonomy continuing to change.

What Is the Scientific Name for an Octopus?

“Octopus” does not refer to just one species, so there is no single universal species name.

Octopuses belong to the order Octopoda, which is part of the cephalopod group. Smithsonian estimates that roughly 300 species of octopuses are known, although classifications continue to change as scientists identify new species and relationships.

One familiar species is the common octopus, Octopus vulgaris.

For reliable general information about octopuses, see the Smithsonian Ocean guide to octopuses and other cephalopods.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the name for an octopus?

The ordinary English name is octopus. Scientifically, octopuses belong to the order Octopoda and class Cephalopoda. Individual species have their own scientific names, such as Octopus vulgaris for the common octopus.

What is the name of the cute octopus?

If you mean the famously cute deep-sea type, you may be thinking of the Dumbo octopus, a group in the genus Grimpoteuthis. Its ear-like fins inspired the nickname because they resemble Disney’s Dumbo.

If you mean the Jellycat plush, the well-known official character is Odell Octopus.

What should I name my octopus Jellycat?

Good Jellycat octopus names include Odell, Odie, Octavia, Clementine, Peachy, Truffle, Lavender, Marmalade, Pudding, and Jellydrop.

Odell is Jellycat’s official character name, but a personal plush can obviously be renamed. There are no octopus naming authorities patrolling bedrooms yet.

What should I name my pink octopus?

Good pink octopus names include Blush, Sakura, Strawberry, Pink Pearl, Bubblegum, Peony, Rosebud, Flamingo, Guava, and Cotton Candy.

What are good octopus names?

Some of the best all-around choices are Inky, Ocho, Octavius, Bubbles, Squish, Wiggles, Marina, Pearl, Tide, Mochi, Otto, Nori, and Ripple.

What is a funny name for an octopus?

Funny choices include Inkognito, Sir Squish, Sucker Punch, Tentacle Tony, Noodle Arms, Dr. Ink, Octo-Pie, Arms Armstrong, Suck Norris, and Captain Suckers.

What is a cute name for an octopus plush?

Cute plush names include Mochi, Squish, Jellybean, Cuddlebug, Wigglebean, Hugtopus, Octopuff, Marshmallow, Bubbles, and Puddlepuff.

What did Romans call an octopus?

Latin writers used polypus for the animal we would identify as an octopus. Pliny the Elder repeatedly used polypus in his Natural History when discussing eight-armed marine animals, and Latin dictionaries give polypus as “octopus” or “cuttlefish.”

The modern English word octopus ultimately comes from Greek oktōpous, literally referring to eight feet.

What are some cute squid names?

Cute squid names include Squiddy, Squiggles, Squish, Squirt, Bloop, Squibble, Wigglet, Little Jet, Inklet, Squidoodle, Bubblefin, and Squidney.

Squid and octopuses are both cephalopods, but squid have eight arms plus two specialized tentacles, while octopuses have eight arms.

Final Thoughts

The best octopus name ideas depend on what you are actually naming.

For cute names, Mochi, Bubbles, Squish, Pebble, and Jellybean are easy winners. For funny names, Inkognito, Sucker Punch, Arms Armstrong, and Tentacle Tony lean into what makes an octopus ridiculous in the first place.

If you need a name for an octopus plush girl, try Poppy, Pearl, Odette, RosiePop, or Cuddle Coral. For a plush boy, Otto, Finnster, Captain Cuddle, Noodle Ned, or Tiny Triton work nicely.
